Derby

This small east-midlands city lies in the marvellous setting of the Derwent Valley, in which were felt the first movements of the Industrial Revolution and the factory system. Despite the decline of traditional manufacturing, the area retains several working mills. Spring visitors can observe the traditional practise of well dressing, in which wells are adorned with patterns created from leaves and petals. Derby maintains 850 year old market tradition and in the Eagle centre can lay claim to one of the country’s largest indoor markets. The city also contains several properties maintained by the National Trust, including Calke Abbey, and Sudbury and Kedleston Halls.
