Guide to the UK
Birkenhead lies on the banks of the river Mersey and is best reached either by the iconic ‘ferry’ cross the Mersey or the Mersey tunnel, the earliest successful underwater tunnel in the world. The town is bearer of a proud industrial history particularly in ship building, and the docks house a fine collection of twentieth century fighting ships. Birkenhead is also home to Merseyside’s oldest building (The Priory, built in 1150) Hamilton square, a remarkable Georgian space, and Wirral museum, once used as The Old Town Hall.
