Guide to the UK
Darlington is perhaps the original railway town. The Stockton and Darlington Railway was the first steam propelled passenger service in the world. The town’s Railway Museum houses Locomotion No. 1, the very first passenger pulling engine built in 1825. A further celebration of steam is situated at Darlington’s outskirts in the form of Train, a brick edifice/sculpture designed by David Mach. Darlington is home to some fine municipal architecture due in part to its still extant Quaker community, including a charming Victorian Market Hall. All the usual shops peddle their wares at the Cornmill Shopping Centre, and smaller specialist shops can be found amongst the lanes of the Imperial Quarter
