Guide to the UK
Doncaster is to all intents and purposes a typical northern industrial town, located within the county of South Yorkshire. The town grew in the nineteenth century with the advent of rail travel and the arrival of the Great Northern Railway, and was a home to Plant Works which manufactured over 2500 locomotives including the Mallard and the Flying Scotsman. Doncaster’s rail-heyday can be revisited at the Steamtown Museum. The town is also known for its sporting connections. Its horse racing course is the annual venue for the St. Leger, the oldest of the classic races, and Doncaster Belles are one of the country’s best women’s football teams.
