Guide to the UK
An important centre for industrial heritage as the railways started there, Stockton and its river are now also a great place for leisure. The Tees has been subject to a clean-up and a barrage has been built. These have created an area of clean, deep water suitable for a range of water sports. White water rafting and canoeing are available on a man-made course and, for the less adventurous, river cruises offer a gentler alternative. The Tees also harbours a full-scale replica of Cook’s Endeavour. In Stockton itself the visitor can sample the delights of Butterfly World and Preston Hall Museum which explores everyday life from the nineteenth to mid-twentieth century, including a recreation of a Victorian street.
