Wakefield

The Yorkshire city of Wakefield has many building of intrigue including examples of fifteenth century masonry and a fourteenth century chapel set above the River Calder. Wakefield Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection, and the museum encourages a hands-on approach to history. The city’s waterfront is currently undergoing regeneration, with a new gallery and Centre for the Creative Arts due to open in 2008. Wakefield also hosts an annual four day Rhubarb Festival as the city forms part of the Yorkshire Rhubarb Triangle. Furthermore, each Easter, Gawthorpe in Wakefield hosts the World Coal Carrying Championship.
