Chester

Chester is Britain’s most complete walled Roman city. Named ‘Deva’ by the settlers/occupiers, the city is rightly proud of its heritage and fine ancient architecture. The original fort can be visited and has a visitor centre attached, and the Norman cathedral is well worth visiting. Chester’s other principal asset is the idyllic river that runs through it. The Dee provides an ideal environment for a walk, rowing expedition or cruise. The city is also associated with its Zoo, which contains the most extensive zoological gardens in the country, as well as the largest Elephant House.
