Exeter

Exeter is the county of Devon’s principal town and has been inhabited for two thousand years. A unique part of its heritage is its mediaeval underground passages, used initially to bring fresh water to the community. Portions of the system can be explored through guided tours. The city has fifteen conservation areas and over 1600 listed buildings, such as the Guildhall, which has stood for 800 years and serves as the home of the city council. Exeter’s Quayside, a port in the sixteenth century and prior to that a roman waterway, now exists as a vibrant centre for public life, containing small shops, places to eat and water based activity.
