Swindon

In common with many Victorian towns Swindon owes its rapid growth to the railways, and was host to the Great Western Railway’s workshops. One of these buildings now houses STEAM, a major museum which celebrates the famous old line and the vision of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Swindon is not just about the railways, however. The town enjoys a number of music festivals throughout the year, and has in recent years become a busy centre for retail. Another set of former railway works is now occupied by the great western designer outlet village. Its Wiltshire location also makes Swindon an ideal place from which to explore the ancient wonders of Stonehenge, Avebury and Silbury Hill
