Guide to the UK
The town of Woking grew in the second half of the twentieth century as part of the New Towns initiatives of post-war governments. The modern town centre is host to the Big Apple, a themed entertainment complex, two covered shopping centres – the Peacocks and Wolsey Place; a market, conference facility and the Ambassadors theatre and cinema complex. Signs of pre-incorporation Woking can be found in the form of the largely ruined Woking Palace, once frequented by Henry VIII and now a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
